Hamper Basket Makeover

hamper3I like having a good project to work on- something to paint or re cover is always fun. I enjoy looking around thrift stores for something I can re do. This may seem weird to some people but it is sort of therapeutic for me and gratifying to see the transformation. When I spotted this old hamper at a thrift store, I knew it would be fun and easy to re do.

IMG_5702Actually, if I had the right style of house, this would have been a cool vintage piece to fix up. I would have re painted it the same yellow and cleaned it up a bit. My house is not ecletic at all though. It wouldn’t work in our house as a vintage piece.

All I needed to do with this was wash it off with a hose and give it two coats of spray paint. I used Rust-Oleum gloss protective French Roast.IMG_5721Once the paint was all dry (I gave it 24 hours), I unscrewed the top and used a staple gun to cover it with my favorite material- drop cloth! I say favorite, because I’ve done a bunch of projects using drop cloth you can find here. I like it because it is sturdy and it looks like linen.IMG_5726-002Here is how it looked once it was painted and the top was covered. IMG_5728-001It needed something extra, so I trimmed the lid with smooth nickel furniture nails. I think it gave it the finishing touch it needed.

  1. Great job on the makeover Kelly. I like the dark brown spray paint you used and the drop cloth cushion.

  2. That turned out very nice. Just like those in the store that cost an arm and leg. TY for sharing this.

I had just seen this hamper on your blog the other day when I went to our Goodwill in Grand Junction and there was a hamper just like it. Only problem, the price was $12.99, come on. I would love to have gotten it, done something similar to yours but not at that price. Our Goodwill and other thrift stores in our area tend to be way too high, even people selling at yard sales are a bit greedy.
Hubs and I are on a very tight budget. With paydays being 5 weeks apart month after month and prices continuing to rise our money just doesn’t cover enuf any more. I was lucky enough to get two end tables to redo at $5 and $8. so hope I can do them justice, make some money on them. You and other bloggers have inspired me to take a chance and give it a try.

    • I hate when thrift stores charge too much. It takes the all the fun out of it! Good you found a good deal on the end tables. I think you’ll have fun working on those. I would love to hear how they turn out.

  4. The basket turned out great ! Love the colors you chose as well 🙂

  5. Awesome Job! I love the new look of your hamper. ;o)

I’m working on redoing a hamper as well. How do you cover under the hamper lid where you stapled the fabric? Great job.
